POST PLACEMENT COUNSELLING
Adoption is forever and like any relationship there are growing pains. Children come into families with a history. They may have lived in institutions, foster homes or even another adoptive home. They may have been placed from close to birth. Even in this situation they come with a birth history and have been faced with their first expereince of goodbye. They have moved from a birth mother and or father (however brief that connection) to a new home environment.
Parents too have history. They grew up learning things from their own famlies of origin about what love looks like and how to parent. Many parents who choose adoption have suffered losses related to infertility and or miscarriage. These losses may have healed but sometimes there are scars. The scars form what I call "hot buttons."
The issues identified briefly in the preceding paragraphs are a few of the reasons why families may run into stresses unique to families through adoption. At Eastern Ontario Adoption there is an in depth understanding of these issues and others that families face. Sandra Forbes is a mother of two children who joined her family through adoption . She is also a family therapist with over twenty five years of experience. She can help.
Transitions and adjustments can be more challenging than families anticipate. Post placement counselling with a qualifed expereinced practitioner can ease the way. Attachment is critical and Eastern Ontario Adoption guides families as they bond, attach and find a way to live together that works for everyone. Issues ebb and flow through the life cycle. We are here to help.
